The GCC countries are going to impose a VAT on cigarettes in the near future. Would you consider this a good c

Answers: yes. any tax on tobacco is helpful in many ways. it is now a scientific and a medical FACT that cigarrettes are bad to your health and cause many diseases like cancers and emphesyma. so hiking the price should theoratically lower demand, thus leading to a healthier society. that in turn reduces future medical costs of treating tobacco illnesses. also the money raised through taxes can go towards social programs to educate the young that cigarrettes are not "cool" but rather outright unhealthy, thus protecting them from picking up the habit. also some of these taxes can go towards smoking cessation programs which now have almost a 50% chance of working given the breakthroughs. it's a win win sitiuation for society and people. the only losers are the tobacco companies who are continuously seeing their market shrink year over year especially in the west. unfortunatelly, they are accelerating their marketing in the second and third worlds and reaping huge profits. but such a tax in the uae will go towards combatting their efforts of grabing market share for smoking.
