I am filing my taxes, but i have no kids. can i put my husband as a dependent?
Answers: NO! He is your husband. You file a joint tax return.
You never claim a spouse as a dependent.
Your filing choices are Married Filing Jointly and Married Filing Separately. If you file a joint return you will claim 2 personal exemptions, one for each of you.
If you file separate returns you'll normally each claim your own personal exemption. If you file separately and your spouse had no income you could claim their personal exemption on your separarate return, HOWEVER you'll be paying much higher taxes in that case than you would if you filed a joint return.
In nearly all cases you'll pay the least total tax by filing jointly.
