Refund of Security Deposit - Box 7 of 1099-MISC?

We rented our house to a tenant. They stopped paying rent and were evicted. During the course of the eviction, they agreed to forfit their collateral deposit that our realtor was holding. In turn, our realtor mail us a check for the $2,400 security deposit along near a 1099-MISC showing the payment surrounded by Box 7 "Non-Employee Compensation." Is that correct? Shouldn't it have any went within Box 1 (Rents) or Box 3 (Other Income)? We have go around and around with our realtor on this and he insists box 7 is correct. But, amounts contained by box 7 are usually subject to self-employement tax. This isn't money he's paying us for services we did for him as a non-employee ... this is a return of a security deposit. What do you meditate?

Answers: You would not file it beneath as self employment. If you are collecting rent you should be fling a schedule E. The wellbeing deposit is now considered rental income.
