Can a former employer short my w2 for any explanation?

I quit a job within June. In late December I be contacted & told they felt they overpaid me while I be employed. This is still being looked into on their finish off, as I asked for proof since I know for a fact that I wasn't, but I'm all the same to recieve my W2. I know the deadline hasn't come yet, but others who worked for the company already recieved their W2's. Would a payment dispute allow them to withhold my W2?

Answers: No, regardless of the situation, they will need to convey you the W-2 by January 31st. If you haven't received it by then, you should contact your elderly employer and request the W-2. If you have not received it by February 15th, after go ahead and contact the IRS and they will contact your former employer.
Federal statute states that ALL w-2's have to be mail by Jan.31st.
