No, refunds or rebates can only be taken for government debts, back child support, or defaulted student loans, not for private debts. You might be able to get a court order though to seize some of their assets.

Im 23 i moved fund contained by near my parents for adjectives final year. currently still here. im contained by college. ive salaried?

150 bucks for rent for the last year. they in a minute want to claim me as a dependent. i dont think its gala. what should i do? is it right for them to? i wanted that money to compensate off credit cards. i basically went through a divorce and times are tough. also - will it effect my fasfa? i want grants.. appreciation

Answers: Unless you paid more than partly the cost of your OWN support then your parents can claim you below the Qualifying Child rule. As a result you lose your personal exemption. Sorry, but that's the LAW, you don't get a choice. And even if they don't claim you, since they CAN claim you, you lose your personal exemption anyway.

Their income will be considered contained by determining how much financial aid you are eligible for.

There's NO way to do it any other process. Your only alternative would have be to NOT have moved home closing year and paid more than partly of your own support. That would almost certainly hold cost you more out of pocket than the few hundred extra you have to compensate in taxes by losing your personal exemption. Cowboy Up and settlement with it.

Note: That kevinmac... poster is incorrect. The canon determines who gets your exemption, NOT what you want to do. He openly doesn't know the LAW even though he claims otherwise...
If you were a full time student during five months of 2007, your parents can claim you as a dependent.

I don't know what effect it would hold on grants.

Edit - I enjoy to disagree with Kevinmac9999 - I believe your parents get hold of to claim you and if they do and you try taking the deduction as resourcefully, you will be the one to have to earnings.
I'm 23 too and i'd b pretty mad... If you haven't worked ending year and you didn't do any taxes they can claim you so you kinda gotta beat them to it. If you do your taxes first they cant claim you. But if you haven't worked they can claim you and do anything they want with the money I guess.. Try discussion to them maybe you can work out something where on earth they can give you a righteous amout of money. Good luck
