1099-G Form for Michigan?

I received a 1099-G statement (Michigan) from the city of Detroit, where my wife works. The amount be for the tax discount that we received from last year's taxes. She started working at that work in 2006, so closing year (2007) was the first year we file Detroit city taxes.

Is this something that we need to claim on our 1040? Granted, it is for single $22, but it is more about the priniciple of why we should or should not hold to claim tax reimbursement money. Is this what we should expect every year? Thanks!

Answers: instructions for Form 1040, line 10 toy with this. see page 20 of general instr. for form 1040

surrounded by general, if you received a import tax benefit for deducting the city income charge in the prior year, this settlement is taxable income. if you did not receive a tax benefit, the discount is not taxable.
Yes, you need to claim that on your income tariff return as income, IF you itemized deductions and used the Detroit City import tax as part of your itemized supposition expenses.

Detroit has no theory if you itemized or not, so it sends a 1099G to everyone who received a tax repayment. If you itemized, claim it as income. If you filed the standard supposition format last year, you entail not include it as taxable income.

What is a flawless export tax calculator? I used turbotax's tax estimator and hr block and they are significantly...?

they are significantly different. Which one would be the most accurate? The IRS calc is not working.

Answers: You can use this pattern. It will give you a rough estimation:

I've get a lot of reason not to go to block, but their export tax calculator is not one of them. Try this one, but don't buy their software. Unless you are in an exceedingly complex income duty situation, you only have need of to buy Tax-Act or Turbo-tax...

Just do Turbotax or TaxAct. eFile on the Federal only and the free Federal eFile. Then be in motion to your State website. You can find it in any explore engine. You type in your State along near "department of taxation". E.g, I typed in California Department of Taxation on yahoo and "California Franchise Tax Board" come up. That's the government body that collects income export tax {and I believe all taxes} for the State of California. I articulate all of that because I do not know a single State that charges on their website. So you can eFile the State return for free. If the IRS accept your return, you should get your State support in 5 business days and your Federal within 10-15 business days depending upon how late within the season. This also depends upon the software not messing up. You have to maintain checking to make sure it go through. I've bought very expensive software beforehand (drake) and it didn't go through. I get all kind of lies and excuses for why it didn't go through, depending upon which rep answered the phone.

What can I do?

I quit my job untimely in the year to attend a trade conservatory full time. I only made around $13,500 for the year. I rolled my 401k into an IRA and took adjectives of it in distributions over the year to survive. I be told i could get a export tax break if I was using my 401k for university but I didn't use it for tuition, I used it to pay the bills. I didn't embezzle taxes out of the distributions either. What can I do to stop from owing thousands?

Answers: you would call for to use your tuition as a deduction or a credit contained by order to liberate some of it from being rewarded, you will still need to income the taxes, but the tuition you paid minus the grants/scholarships you received can be credited to your tariff owed... if you still do not understand budge to irs.gov and look up the lifetime learning/hope credits and do the worksheet to figure out what you would go and get back as in good health
