It depends on how you are rewarded.

If it's SDI, it's not taxable. If it's PFL, it is.

You'll get a 1099G if it's taxable.
California State Disability Insurance benefits are not taxable. You will not return with a 1099 telling you to put them on your return. Disability insurance compensated for by you is paid levy free. If your employer paid for disability insurance, that would be taxable.

I am from California.

What percent to set aside if I own a 1099?

my father is working as a dependent contractor which is 1099, what percent he nneds to set aside and what deductions he can claim

Answers: He'll owe at smallest 15% in self-employment taxes. The income tariff is impossible to predict as it will depend upon his total income, filing status, number of dependents, deduction, etc.

For example if the net income form his business be $65,000 and he's married and has 2 children that can be claimed as dependents and he take the standard deduction he'd owe in the order of $2,600 in income taxes. However he'd owe almost $9,200 within self-employment taxes so he'd need to set aside in the order of 20% of his net income to cover that debt.

He'd hold to make quarterly estimated levy payments using Form 1040-ES of about $3,200 on 4/15, 6/15, 9/15 and 1/15/2009. If he of late salted the money aside as one poster foolishly suggested he'd be hit with penalty and interest for underpayment of estimated taxes.

This is ONLY an example. He'll have to run the numbers for his specific situation to see how much he'll stipulation to set aside and how much estimated tax payments he'll call for to make. And if your state levy an income tax he'll hold to figure that contained by as well.

He can download the Form 1040-ES roll from the IRS website and use the worksheets to estimate his income and figure out the amount of estimated payments that he'd inevitability to make.
I'm guessing you indicate INdependent contractor.

When filing, the simple amount is 25% of the 1099 income; however, the filing form will supply you specific instructions. There are a slew of deductions he can nick.

Here's an IRS list:

It is usually nontoxic to set aside 30%. I put my "tax money" surrounded by CD's and set them up so they will mature previously April 15th. I always fall up owing less than I enjoy saved, so the disappeared over money is like have an income tax return.
Your father should address to his accountant to be sure. The accountant can also give him a worksheet to save track of deductions (mine does).
Cannot speak without knowing what his lattice gross earnings will be for self employment excise reasons and what his charge liability will be to see what tax bracket he will be contained by.

The self employment tax is 15% and his federal duty could be 25% or higher and later he has state import tax if the state he lives in have taxes

Earned income credit..I am soooo confused!!?

I made about 1,250 ending year (i started working in behind november). I am claiming 1 child and i am not married.when i went to the irs website i file the freeefile and it told me i would be getting back 438? i claimed my child as capably...whenever i filed formerly i would get close to in the thousands 1 or 2 gs. how come it is unfolding me such a little amount? did i do something wrong? pls explain

Answers: I other use turbotax online. You can always step there and do your taxes, they ask a bunch of question to make sure you are doing everything right. It will let somebody know you the exact amount of your refund and pace youthrough everything. You dont have to income for it unless you actually FILE it beside them. You can just use that as a doublechecking method to see if the amount is right.
The amount of EIC depends on your income. I'm guessing that when you get thousands of dollars, your income was much difficult. At $1250 income with one child, your EIC would be $434. The other $4 is probably a settlement of all of your withholding for federal income levy.
