Taxes Questions and Answers

The DJ on the morning show I listen to said he can write past its sell-by date his commuting miles. How is this possible?

Just this morning, he said his tax accountant tell him he can write off his miles driving to work, provided he have gas receipts and a travel log. Does anyone know how this is possible?

Answers: It isn't, legally, whether he's an independent contractor as one responder mentions, or not - and I can't envisage that a DJ could be an independent contractor anyway, since his hours and workplace are obviously set. Commuting miles are never deductible. Either he's freshly making that up, he's clueless, or his "tax accountant" is clueless.

If he is doing it, he's file a false return. And if he said that on the air, there's a average chance somebody from the IRS will own heard him and someone will be auditing him over this.

Edit re your auxiliary info: His "main place of business" would be the studio, not his home, even if he does some of his work from home, so his miles to the studio are still commuting miles and not deductible.

As to the cable bill, he might know how to make a bag for that with the IRS.
firstly, you don't "write off" anything. it's call a deduction.

second, he CANNOT discount commuting miles (miles from his home to his primary job)

but he could deduct miles driven to acting job sites, approaching if he goes to a vehicle dealership to do a show and goes contained by his own car.
I'm afraid the DJ desires a new accountant, as commuting mileage is not deductible.

An exception exists for a second work. If your DJ worked at another job and next drove directly to the radio station from that other job, those miles would be deductible. His trip home after the radio show, however, would not be.
Reading the morning rag before you travel to work ("media research") does not silver the nature of these miles from commuting to non-commuting.

The radio station does NOT require the DJ to hold a home office, so it's not his place of business. His charge is his place of business and every one of those miles is COMMUTING.

If you move - how does your W2's from previous jobs, 1099 forms find you? Who do I need to contact?

Answers: Its your responsibility to notify former employers of your current address (and also to file a change of address with the post office).
Fill out a "Change of Address" form at the post office. You can also call your previous employers to let them know of your new address.

Is an engagement ring tax deductible?

Answers: No, neither is your wedding or divorce.
Not if it is being used for its normal purpose.

Possibly, if it is a prop for a theatrical production, movie, television show, etc.
You can deduct the sales tax if you take a pass on deducting state income tax.

Other than that it is an amour-tizable capital expense.
