How long are we required to hang on to receipts etc for business excise purposes?

Tired of boxes of receipts ect. how long does the irs require
me to keep my business collection?


Answers: If you never filed, near is no time limit on that year. IRS have 3 years to audit you from the date the return is filed surrounded by a civil matter. If it is file late, 3 years from the date file.

For the Criminal Investigation Division it is longer. Very rarely does IRS CID become involved next to regular folks. They stick to drug dealers, fraudsters, and export tax protest kooks.

I'd say 4 years is plenty locked on filed returns, but 7 if you are a authentic worry wart.
To support your side within an audit, I'd keep at minimum a seven year stretch of receipts.

If space is at a premium, rent a small storage locker and write rotten the fee's as a business expense.
Under normal circumstances the IRS have 3 years to audit your return (that can be expanded to 6 years or unlimited under solid situations).

Even so, you need to hang on to records for anything which have an affect on your current return. Examples include long-term assets still being depreciated, reason costs, etc.

One of my clients once had to produce a check from 14 years up to that time to prove S corporation basis for deduct a loss. Luckily he still had it.

If your total income from a self employment is at least $400 or more you must folder a tax return to pay packet social security and Medicare duty. That is a judgment name you have to generate. Depending on your state's rules, making the repairs may be counterproductive. In my state, California, you have to dispense the buyer a smog clearance that is smaller number than 90 days old or the vehicle cannot be registered. If the cost of repairs exceeds the do market effectiveness of the vehicle then it should be junk.

You don't mention what your situation is but you have to itemize your deduction before you can carry a tax benefit from any charitable contribution.
