I rent an apartment out of town during the week while at my gov't job. Can I write this off as a business expe
Answers: It depends if they required you to stay there, or if they told you all expenses paid.
no
the expenses of commuting to your permanent job's location are not deductible.
only if it was required by your job that you rented the apt.
if you did it for convenience because of the commute im sorry you cannot
Is the government job your only and permanent job? If so, the cost of the apartment is not deductible. You have the option of moving closer to your job.
If the government job is not a permanent job, but a temporary assignment from your permanent job, it is possible that the lodging may be deductible. If this applies, discuss the particulars with a professional preparer.
If the government job is a second job, and you have another job at your other location, then the travel expenses from the first job to the second job would be deductible. Lodging would most likely not be deductible in this case.
No, sorry but that's a personal expense and not deductible.
