I am running an internet business. Do i have to charge sales tax to out of state customers?
Answers: the Congress of the United States says no.
There was an article in the Wall Street Journal about this very subject several months back. The States are arguing that the purchasers are lying about where they are. So far you don't, but be ready. That day is coming.
This is my first W-2 form, how do I fill it out? (If anything should be filled in)?
Answers: You don't fill out anything on a W2...you may have to pay taxes on your income...if you need help with your taxes you can go to H & R.they will do it for you...$40-$60 bucks...you will get most all of taxes back.
Are you asking how to do your tax return and saying you got a W-2 form from your employer, or are you just starting a job and they gave you a W-4 form to fill out? YOU don't fill out a W-2, that's the form your employer gives you at the end of the year.
If it's a W-4, fill out the indentifying info like your name, address and social security number. Check the appropriate box on line 3. On line 5 put zero if you are a dependent of your parents, otherwise put 1. Sign the form.
If it is a W-2 that you got from your employer, it depends on how much you made and if you had other income also during the year. If it's your only income you can use a form 1040EZ for your tax return as long as you aren't claiming any dependents. If you made less than $5350 if you are a dependent, or less than $8750 if you aren't, you don't have to file a return. But if there is anything in box 2 of the W-2 form, and you didn't make enough to have to file, you should file anyway and they'll refund the amount in box 2.
You can download the 1040EZ form and instructions at irs.gov
You may talking about the W-4 form. You should claim only yourself as an exemption if you are not supporting yourself. If it is a W-2, you fill out nothing. You use the information to do your taxes. Box 1 is your wages, unless you are a waitress. Then there will be a figure in Box 7 and maybe Box 8 also. Box 2 is the FEDERAL income tax that was withheld from you so that you do not have a whopping income tax bill in April. Check Box 15. If your State has income tax, the post office abbreviation of the State will be in there. Box 1,3,5 and 16 will likely have the same figure in your situation. Box 17 shows how much the State withheld from you. You will see Box 18-20 blank unless your city has income tax also.
Don't go to block nor jackson-hewritt. Just use Turbotax or TaxAct online. That should be no charge. EFile on the Federal only and the free Federal eFile. Then go to your State website. You can find it in any search engine. You type in your State along with "department of taxation". E.g, I typed in California Department of Taxation on yahoo and "California Franchise Tax
Board" came up. That's the government body that collects income tax {and I believe all taxes} for the State of California. I say all of that because I do not know a single State that charges on their website. So you can eFile the State return for free! If the IRS accepts your return, you should get your State back in 5 business days and your Federal in 10-15 business days, depending upon how late in the season. This also depends upon the software not
messing up. You have to keep checking to make sure it went through. I've bought very expensive software before and it didn't go through. I got all kinds of lies and excuses for why it didn't go through, depending upon which rep answered the phone. So you don't need to buy expensive software, especially in your tax circumstance.
