Taxes Questions and Answers

I recieved unemployment this year, but I still paid taxes and I just filed. Am I eligable for the tax rebate?

Answers: Unemployment benefits have no impact on your proposed rebate.

Under the terms of the compromise Congressional bill, you would be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $600 if you paid that much in 2007 Federal Income Tax. If you only paid $350 in taxes (less than the $600 rebate limit), you only get back $350.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the proposed plan, in 2008, taxes would be cut from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

It's like a one time tax cut for 2008, but you get the rebate now instead of waiting to file your 2008 taxes. Because this is an advance payment on your 2008 taxes, your refund next year could be more (or less!) depending on your 2008 income.

Tax married status for stimulus monetary carton?

So I got married at the completely end of 2007. My wife is a full time student and her father requirements to file her as a dependant for 2007 since he help with her tuition. If he files her as a dependant, can we database jointly? Also, do you entail to be filed in concert to be considered a married couple in eligibility for the financial stimulus package? My income is too big (>$75k) to be eligible by myself.

Answers: her father can not claim her as a dependant if she is over 18 and didn't live at home, even if he pitched in on her tuitiion.
